What is Douchebag Poker?

This is hardly an original name, or original poker term, for that matter, but since I liked the shortened version of it so much, I decided to use it in my blog.

So what, exactly, is Douchebag Poker? Simple: Douchebag Poker happens when you play a poker hand knowing full well that you are way behind in the hand, and you're not getting proper pot odds to play the hand further, and yet you play the hand, anyways...and end up winning the hand. That, my friends, is Douchebag Poker.

Being a douchebag means that you are allowed to shrug your shoulders, sheepishly chuckle, and say, "Sorry, man!" when you suckout on someone - having humility in this game is admirable at times. Being a douchebag does not mean that you loudly brag for a couple of minutes about what a great call you made getting 2-1 odds after the turn for your 19-1 dog and hitting your 2-outer on the river. That is not being a douchebag, my friend. That's just being a dick!

So, does cracking AA with KJ make me a douchebag, or a dick? 8)

Well, considering at the time I believe both of us had 1 big blind each left in our stacks, there's really no expectation that:

1) Any of us would have AA
2) KJ isn't the best hand

Okay, I know you're just being sarcastic, but I'll give you a great example of douchebag poker at it's finest from our Monday night games.

Last season I was sitting across from Nicole, and it was at the 25/50 or 50/100 level. I look at A-J on the button, and raise 3xBB. Nicole and, I believe, Eugene, in the blind both called.

Flop comes K-rag-rag, I throw a continuation bet out there after getting it checked to me, get 2 callers.

Turn is a Q, but gives me a flush draw. This time I get Eugene opening up the betting, Nicole min-raises, and I think for a minute before calling or folding.

I know at this point Nicole most likely has 2 pair, and no flush draw...so I have 4 outs. I know Nicole can be bluffed on the river (well, so can I, but that's neither here nor there), especially if an ace comes out, so even though I know I have at most 7 outs to make this happen, I call...not getting anywhere near correct odds to call, based on the betting.

So what hits on the river? Of course, a 10 - nut straight. Nicole properly bets, I raise half the pot...she can't lay down 2 pair, and she actually says, "What the fukk was that, Brian?", and probably thinking that I was no different than Fred or Ron chasing a 4-outer or something.

Basically, I did everything wrong in that hand, was behind the whole hand, and still sucked out and won. As Scotty Nguyen might say:

"That's douchebag poker, baby!"
